Final

Final

Rationale
Using the negative side of social media I formed the idea of distraction and not allowing websites make you miss out on important moments or information in real life. I wanted to use the logos rhetoric strategic tool to get across my idea therefore working with statistics specific to NZ. Basing the idea around Facebook due to its recognisable features I used the colour scheme, typeface and icons similar to those used on the website. I wanted to use ihi and wehi to connect to the viewer and evoke thought about whether they have in fact missed out on things and if they should lower their Facebook and other social media intake.
Poster Wall

I got told after doing the previous poster wall that we were meant to use this wall as a template so wasn't sure and did both :)

Class 6.2

19th August
Final Critique
Critique

After a long time chilling next to the printers as they weren't working greatly I finally managed to get a print out of my poster up to date having to wait til near the end of the class to get a proper critique due to the fact I missed the group peer critique sessions because of waiting for printing. There were a few minor things that I need to fix up before printing that were annoying me also so they should be easy enough to print off.

18th August
Wrapping up the design
Critique l Making

One of the last moments for critique I managed to gain a bit of peer feedback but unfortunately I was unable to gain tutor feedback today, tomorrow however that will be the main plan. With my personal critique and peer feedback I was able to come up to this design, still the amount of time I've, and fellow peers and tutors have spent looking at my poster, I'm unable to notice major mistakes. I can however see minor mistakes which at this time is all I can really do and I've managed to fix them. Personally I feel it's a shame that my poster looks quite similar to the concept development and might be taken for not being developed enough but the composition itself took quite a lot to get it to this part...

Kerning and other extras
Ideate l Making

After deciding my poster was near in the end I decided it was time to get onto the micro level detailing mainly around my type; including leading and kerning. I also continued with developing the New Zealand graph as it still wasn't working how I wanted, however after trying out various other ways the original idea seemed the best which therefore leads me to be unhappy with that part of the poster but at the moment there's nothing I can do about it apart from remove it which throws off the balance of the entire poster.

Class 5.2

12th August
Tutor critique and hand in information
Critique l Ideate

I managed to get critique from a tutor who hadn't seen my work so far this project which allowed me to get a fresh view on my poster so far. I also messaged a few of my design friends from the UK to give me some feedback for a fresh view as well. From this I was able to see parts of my poster that I, or my fellow peers who normally critique my work, overlook.
The main road for me to take between now and next week hand in is to think deeply about the compositon of both the entire image and the text; consider rearranging the text. Other minor things such as colour and sizing of the main words to make them stand out.

Class 5.1

11th August
Feedback and development
Critique l Making

After sitting down with my tutor and getting some feedback on my typographic/infographic design I'm happier and more confident in moving forward with it. With then feedback given about thinking about different design styles and techniques including 'picking out', I've got a closer idea of how I want to pursue this design. I'm confident I can develop this design more than the computer/distraction design if I make sure to make the message clear enough that it can be recognised whilst driving past on a bus or car.
Now I just have to work with wording, composition and main features to end up at my final design.

Independent Study 4

6th August - 10th August
Queries and Development
Ideate l Critique l Making

8th August -
Even after critiques on my posters saying that my distraction poster is really working and has a strong message and rhetoric I feel like it's not going where I want it to go. Even though I can sort out the ideas my tutors and peers told me I should work with and experiment with I feel in the end it's not going to have moved enough on from my concept as it should have. Whether this is because my concept in the beginning was too developed before it was even a concept or it's a lost cause.

9th August -
After using the critique comments to develop my work I'm still unsure if it's going the way I want. Not only am I concerned about how far it's developed but I'm not sure about the look of the poster anymore. I don't like it and don't really want to work with it much longer. Being just over a week before it's due I don't think I can do anything about this and will have to work with it.

10th August -
After the past few days of unsureness I've decided to take the other A3 concept from the interim that was also chosen as strong to develop further. Previously I decided this would be the case but ended up only developing the one so now after having some troubles with the other poster I decided this would be the best decision instead of just sitting here trying to develop things I really don't like or don't think is working. It was pointed out in the interim that it may not fit the brief but having read over the brief I think if worked right it would work. Also it's developed with a distinct Logos pathway which the other poster does not have a clear strategic rhetoric tool. I'm still unsure even with this development if there's too much information for a large poster, I'll have to consult my tutor and peers in class tomorrow.
The brief: "How are you wanting the message to be received? Posters operate in a public space. To be effective, they must be designed so as to grab the audience’s attention from a distance, and be visually arresting so as to entice the viewer into reading complex information that is delivered on a number of levels." I don't think either of mine do this at the moment...
